Best Overall - FIIDO 250W 16 Inch 6 Speed Folding Electric Bicycle

This high-strength aluminum alloy framed commuter boasts the smallest folded size of our five favourites.

Making it great if you share your daily commute between the cycleways and public transport.

Not to mention being able to tuck it under your desk once you get there – no need for locking this bike in the public racks. It’s lightweight frame makes it easy to carry once it’s folded too.

Six-speed shimano gearing ensures you maintain your pace, no matter what your speed.

And 16 inch alloy rims with air-filled rubber tires add to the comfort provided by the rear shock-absorber to help iron out the bumps.

Disc brakes on both the front and rear mean you won’t have any trouble pulling up when you need to, either.

What we love about this little electric folder is that using the throttle alone, you can still manage inclines of up to 30 degrees.

This is a great feature, and something many lightweight electric bikes are just not capable of – let alone without pedaling!

Small, lightweight, portable, safe and quick, the Fiido 16 inch is packed with all the features you could need for commuting or travel-friendly biking.

And the can’t-live-without feature that helps seal the deal on the winner of this category…a built-in cellphone mount with a separate USB port for on-the-go charging.

Runner-up: Goplus Folding Electric Bicycle

Second on our list of favourites is, as the name suggests, a real lightweight.

Coming in at just 28.6 lb (or 13 kg), this is the lightest of all 5 place-getters in our 2019 Folding eBike Review.

This sporty city commuter is available with either a 120W or 180W motor, so you can choose the size you prefer, depending on your needs.

With a 2-speed electronic transmission, you can forget about head miles and just let the Goplus do the thinking for you, no gear changes necessary.

It’s high or low, and away you go!

Featuring dual disc brakes, you’ll have no trouble stopping when you need to and the adjustable coil shocks will keep you riding smoothly.

This compact little package is the second smallest of our 5 bikes and that’s just one reason it made the top two.

The quick release locks make setting up or collapsing this eBike a breeze.

Folding the handlebars down and pushing the seat post all the way in cuts the height dramatically, and the sturdy hinge tucks the back wheel neatly under the frame.

As a commuter you can easily carry this bike onto the bus or train if a full commute isn’t your style.

Fitting it into the trunk of your car is easy too, if you need to park and ride.

Not just for commuters though, like all of our selections in this guide, the Goplus is a great little traveler.

Taking up minimal space in your trunk or RV, this folding bike is ready for duty just as soon as you arrive.

A full charge can take you around 19 miles (30.5 km), depending on your individual load and throttle usage, and the built-in battery will recharge fully in just 4 hours.

That’s a lot of scope for discovering the hidden gems that are inconvenient to find in your camper.

Overall, the Goplus scores well in the weight and compactness departments.

With an adjustable handlebar stem and seat posts, this little run-around is comfortable for most adults, but with the smallest overall seat height of our 5 favourite fold-up electric bikes, you may want to double check your minimum requirements if you’re tall.

Featuring a relatively small motor size (as far as many electric bicycle motors are concerned), this bike is best ridden on flat, paved surfaces. Being so lightweight and portable though, if there are any steep inclines on your commute or in your neighbourhood, this is an easy bike to walk or pick up and carry. It has definitely earned its position as runner-up in 2019.

Best Allrounder - ANCHEER Folding Electric Bike

The Ancheer 16 Inch is the first of our alternative portable electric bikes. And a great alternative it makes too.

Often referred to as a mini eBike, don’t let the title fool you. With a load capacity of 220 lbs (almost 100kg), you can get yourself around town without leaving anything behind.

A removable 36V 8AH lithium battery provides the single-speed brushless 250W motor with all the power you need, enabling you to reach speeds of 15.5 mph (or 24.9 kph).

Needing a charge time of just 4-6 hours, you can even charge your battery while you’re at work.

And don’t think that means you’ve got to plug your bike into the wall socket.

Unlocking and removing the battery means you can charge it anywhere that’s convenient, whether on or off the bike.

Attaining a range of 15 miles (25 km) purely using the electric mode, or 30 miles (50 km) in pedal assist mode, on a single charge, this fold up bike makes for a great commuter or traveler’s ride.

Having a waterproof rating of IP65, you don’t have to worry about being caught in the rain or riding through puddles.

Ancheer’s design means that all the electrically-driven components are protected from water jets that come from any angle.

Using only the motor, you’re able to handle hilly terrain up to 15 degrees with ease.

On slopes greater than this, just use pedal assist mode and add the power of your legs to the motor, to get you up and over the biggest hills.

Weighing about 37 lb (16.8 kg), this folding eBike is still light enough to carry on and off public transport or in and out of the trunk of your car.

And it’s small folded dimensions make it a perfect traveling companion.

A high-strength carbon steel frame ensures sturdiness, provides stability on your ride, and makes it robust enough to handle everyday bumps and knocks.

A quick release lever unlocks a durable hinge in the crossmember and allows the front and rear wheels to fold so that they meet neatly together.

With the seat pushed down fully and the handlebars folded (also with quick release mechanisms), you have a reliable mode of transport taking up very little space.

Getting good speeds and great range, the Ancheer is a very worthy alternative for electric bike folding, without resorting to origami.

It’s mechanical disc brakes on the front and rear make it responsive and safe and the sprung saddle and air-filled MTB tires mean you’ll also maintain your comfort as you ride.

A great all-rounder, we’d say, ‘Three cheers for the Ancheer!’

Best for Paved Roads - shaofu Folding Electric Bike

Of the 5 bikes we’ve looked at for our review, the Shaofu is the most like a scooter. Weighing in at only 26.5 lb (12 kg), it’s the lightest by 2.1 lb (1kg).

Making it super easy to maneuver on and off public transport, in and out of your trunk, or even to carry it up a flight of stairs.

In true scooter fashion, this portable electric bike has no pedals.

Using the Shaofu’s smartphone app, you can set the speed, lock the motor, record your times and mileage and even enable cruise control.

Many functions you won’t find on a full-sized scooter.

Even for its diminutive size, it has a maximum load capacity of 265 lb (120.2 kg).

The lightweight alloy frame teaming with a carbon steel fork provides the strength necessary for such a load, without compromising on this folding bike’s agility.

Charging the 36V 8AH battery is simple, using the Easy Charge Port. The battery can be plugged in either on or off the bike.

A removable battery has the added advantage of being able to be charged wherever is most convenient, and it also adds and extra layer of safety.

If you do ever need to leave your bike in a public rack or locked somewhere, you can take your battery with you, safe in the knowledge that if anyone were to take it, they couldn’t even pedal it away!

Of all the folding bikes mentioned here, our second alternative takes up the most room.

In this style of bike, only the handlebars fold down, so the overall size only changes in height. It’s certainly still small enough to carry or store easily, though.

Suitable from teenagers through to adults, this urban commuter gets between 10.6 and 12.4 miles (17-20kms) range out of a fully charged battery.

With a charge time of less than 3 hours, that makes for a lot of riding capacity.

The Shaofu’s minimal mass and wide range of features give this little dolphin-shaped scooter it’s position on our list, however, it’s lack of pedals mean that it’s really only suited to flat paved roads.

Without the added assistance that pedals give your eBike to traverse hilly terrain, you might find yourself limited to where you can go.

A great little commuter or traveling partner for flatland needs.

Best Carrying Capacity - Eahora X6 Folding Electric Bicycle

With a gutsy 350W motor, this 20 inch Eahora X6 Snow eBike sure packs a punch. Able to carry 330 lb (149.6 kg), it’s definitely the heavyweight of the bunch. In addition to it’s mighty carrying capacity, it can reach speeds of up to 28 mph or 45 kph. Quite the momentum for a folding bicycle!

Unlike all of the other bikes we’ve mentioned, the X6 has the capacity to recharge its own battery.

When pedal assist mode is turned off or on level 1 and speeds of 13 mph (20.9 kph) are reached, the battery can restore up to 35% of its power.

That sounds to us like a great reason to keep your speed up.

If you are relying on more sedentary methods of charging your battery, a full recharge of the 48V 13AH capacity takes 5-6 hours.

Also super-sized, the range this humble folding electric bike reaches is 40 – 55 miles (64.3 – 88.5 km) on a charge.

Not a bad tradeoff for those few extra plugged-in hours.

While it weighs the most of our 5 reviewed eBikes, the 48lbs (21.7 kg) is well utilized in the one-piece aluminium alloy frame, enhanced rust-proof forks, and larger and more robust 20 x 3 inch rims.

With quick-release levers, folding and unfolding is a breeze and each catch locks securely in place to ensure a sturdy ride.

The adjustable handlebar stem and seat post are also easily tailored for your comfort with the same mechanisms.

Boasting functionality for riders between 4’4” and 6’4”, the X6 Snow eBike easily serves the widest range of consumers.

And with a few high-end features, like a Shimano 8 speed finger puller/gear shifter, multi-toothed 3” fat tyres, leather and memory foam saddle and foldable wellgo pedals, there’s certainly enough to tempt even the fussiest of folding bike connoisers.

Suited to everything from a city commute to uneven terrain, the Eahora X6 is a great all-rounder that allows for a heap of fun if you don’t mind trading a bit of weight and time for your specifications.

Folding Electric Bikes FAQ

Electric Folding Bike FAQ

Why are folding bikes so popular?

Folding bikes are popular among travelers and city-dwellers alike.

For travelers, they are the ideal addition to RV adventuring, folding small enough to be kept in the trunk or storage bay.

Once you are set up, it’s just a matter of grabbing out your portable electric bike, unfolding it and heading for the sites.

In the city, they make great commuters. Their fold-up design adding to their convenience.

In addition to the electric power they provide, you needn’t even park and lock them up. Simply fold and carry with you.

In addition to their ease of use, they generally cost less than a non-folding bike.

Most have smaller wheels and a smaller overall size than an average bicycle, and this can reduce the cost substantially.

Innovations have finally brought style to foldable electric bicycles and we think this has increased their popularity immensely.

They have been around long enough now that designers are taking aesthetics into account, as well as pure functionality.

What are the advantages of folding electric bikes?

Space saving is the biggest advantage – not just for serious travellers, but for urban-dwellers as well.

Folding electric bicycles are small enough to fit into the trunk of your car and be on hand whenever you need them.

And there’s no need for a bulky rack for transport (and that makes parking difficult).

Their smaller size means they weigh a lot less than standard electric bikes do, making them a real alternative.

The distance you can cover on a foldable electric bike is a real plus.

Not just because of the range you can get out of a single charge, but also because they are public-transport-friendly.

Using an electric motor to power your ride, in addition to linking with trains and buses, allows you to go a lot further than you could as a pedestrian. And many forms of public transport will not accept full sized cycles.

It no longer matters if the battery is built-in, because you can easily bring the whole bike inside to charge it.

You no longer have to plug it in in your garage or storage shed.

They are super easy to keep safe – you don’t have to lock it up or leave it on the street when you can just bring it inside.

What is the lightest folding electric bike?

Vello Bike + Electric

While many brands lay claim to the lightest folding electric bicycle on the market, I think we will continue to see the ‘top bike’ change as technology develops even further.

Of course, choosing an aluminium alloy over a steel frame will always give you a lighter ride, but the biggest gains at the moment are being made in the weight of the battery.

A larger capacity battery will definitely keep you riding longer, but as folding electric bikes are suited more for the commuter and traveler market, extended range is not such an issue and a smaller battery will do the job just fine.

In addition to our own lightweight, these two take beating Vello Bike +

The total weight is just 26.4 lbs (12 kg) for the double-butted chromoly steel frame, 24 lbs (10.9 kg) for the titanium frame, or 21.8 lbs (9.9 kg) for the carbon fiber version.

With a wheel mounted motor, battery and regenerative charger all fitted inside the rear hub, this folding electric bike looks far more like it’s non-folding bicycle cousins, electric or otherwise.

The lightest of our 5 best folding electric bikes in 2019

The lightest of the 5 bikes we selected is our second alternative, the SHAOFU 350W 12” Waterproof Folding Electric Bicycle

Building in the LG cell battery has saved on componentry and also weight.

The collapsable, lightweight aluminum alloy frame and double layer aluminum alloy wheels limit the mass that you get in full- or part-steel constructions.

So, our little folder has no extra weight there.

It’s 12 inch wheels also minimize the burden. Mechanical Disc brakes mean there’s no added weight of hydraulic fluid.

While not having a built-in pedal assist function means you’re limited to mostly flat, paved terrain, it means that weight has been saved on those components.

In general, manufacturers do their best to combine strength and rigidity with lightweight materials and necessary functionality.

Our best piece of advice when buying a folding electric bike, is to be clear about what you require and what you want, and find the brand that best suits your needs.

Can you convert an ordinary folding bike to an electric one?

Folding Bikes Converted

Yes, you can – but there are some limitations

Many folding bikes have wheel sizes between 16” and 20” and these often don’t have the necessary clearance between the dropouts of the front forks.

This means that they can not fit the hub of an electric bike motor on their front wheel. This limits these bikes to using a rear wheel conversion kit.

If you are doing a rear wheel electric conversion to your foldable eBike, you will also need to add a freewheel with the back hub motor, so that your ride can still be powered without you pedaling.

This is not needed if you can fit a motor into the front wheel.

If you have scope to do a front wheel conversion, aluminium forks can occasionally cause problems because of movement or stretching.

These conversions are generally more successful if done on steel forks.

For a rear hub electrification, aluminum dropouts are usually fine as they are more heavily built.

Using a steel torque arm (or pair of arms), regardless of whether it is front- or back-wheel driven, can minimize motion and slack in the mechanism.

This provides more rigidity and diminishes the chance of cracks forming.

For some further tips and information, see our How To Make Your Bike Electric article.

Although plenty of people have had success, converting a folding bike with suspension can introduce problems to your ride.

The torque of the electric motor can create play in the pivot point that the suspension creates and you might find some independent wobbling between the 2 halves of the bike.

This article, Are Electric Bike Conversion Kits Easy to Install? provides more advice which might help you make your decision.

To avoid the common problems with installing electric wheel hub motors on your folding bike, you could potentially mount a friction drive onto the rear wheel.

Depending on the model, this could mess with the folding ability and overall folded size of your bike.

Some of the older (and cheaper) friction wheels are quite bulky and add a substantial amount of weight, however, the newer ones are removable and a whole lot lighter.

This may be an easy and less time-consuming approach to converting your bike.

Things to keep in mind:

Any additions will add weight and bulk to your folding bicycle, and your previous fold-up size may be compromised.

Some conversion kits do not come with a battery, so factor this in, as you may need to make sure you have a convenient and safe mounting point or rear- or front-mounted bag for it.

Not all kits are waterproof. Make sure to check this with any kit you buy.

If our buying guide hasn’t convinced you to buy a new electric folding bike and you’re committed to converting your standard folder, you could look here to find out Where to Buy an Electric Motor for Your Electric Bike Conversion Project.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are a lot of options on the market, and it would seem that there is a folding electric bike for just about every need. In addition to this, the choices are only getting better, with new technological developments and more stylistic design.

Better alloys, more refined motor drive systems, better lifespan of parts and cheaper production costs all tell us that it’s a buyer’s market.
